Criminology & Criminal Psychology

Students will be exposed to the psychology of criminal conduct and be able to appreciate a range of perspectives from relevant literature that seeks to shed light on crime and its commission, from psychopathy and sexual offending to serial killing. By the course conclusion, attendees will have a significant understanding of crime categories, offending behaviours, and how a criminological and psychological understanding impacts on prevention, rehabilitation, and treatment.

Counselling Psychology

The aim of this diploma course is to introduce learners to the basic concepts involved in the clinical practice of Counselling Psychology. Each participant will have an enjoyable and engaging entry-point to a complex and multi-faceted subject area. Theories derived from the three main basic therapeutic frameworks; humanistic, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioural will be covered and attention will also be paid to broad differences between counselling psychology and related professions.

Corporate Fraud Investigation

Delivered by leading academics and financial services experts, students will consider a history of corporate fraud and then examine the Irish experience. All lectures will be related to various theories of white-collar crime and offending. At the end of the course, learners will have a detailed understanding of how corporate fraud operates in today’s world and how, without individual or societal intervention, it may flourish still further in the coming decades.

Personal Insolvency Practitioner

The Personal Insolvency Act 2012 constitutes a major shift in Irish policy relating to insolvency, and implements a new scheme to ameliorate the difficulties suffered by debtors in discharging their indebtedness. This new certificate programme, delivered by City Colleges provides participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to become personal insolvency practitioners.

On completion of the programme the Personal Insolvency Practitioner will be equipped will an in-depth knowledge of insolvency law in Ireland which will enable the Personal Insolvency Practitioner to act for and advise debtors in the personal insolvency procedure.

Applied Behaviour Analysis

This course is aimed at providing students with a clear critical, analytic, and evaluative understanding and solid foundation of contemporary knowledge in behavioural theory and practice and the principles underpinning the subject area. Students will be provided with a critical insight into, and evaluative understanding of, the practical applications of the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) with particular attention paid to examples and areas related to:

  • autism and persons with autism;
  • particular areas of intellectual and developmental disabilities;
  • children and adolescents in care, and,
  • persons with certain identifiable learning and/or behavioural challenges in particular schools level contexts

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT involves the critical observation and identification of behavioural activities and individual and environmental contexts in order to increase our comprehension, understanding and evaluative awareness of these. CBT is therefore designed to enhance the criticality of thinking; analysis; comprehension and application abilities in order to bring about behavioural change. The thinking and applications skills attained from developing an enhanced critical comprehension of CBT can be applied in multiple persona, practical and professional settings. The module is therefore designed to be utilised in a number of contemporary situations and professions and environmental contexts.

Social Care Studies

This Diploma was developed in response to the continuing education needs of professionals in social and community settings in Ireland. In the context of professionalization of social care work, this course reflects the area of social care in Ireland from a practical perspective.

The course explores current social care practices, theoretical concepts and approaches in a variety of diverse settings in Ireland.

The aim of the Diploma is to educate reflective practitioners who can continue to learn and develop their professional knowledge, interpersonal skills and self-awareness appropriate for careers in social care.

Retail & Consumer Behaviour

Our course in the Psychology of Retail & Consumer Behaviour is a fascinating course for anyone in a marketing, sales or customer facing role to augment understanding of the motivation behind the buying behaviour of customers.

Featuring the latest in thinking and studies is this emerging field, lecturer Sarah Strange will deliver a content rich course divided into four themes: The Marketplace & Consumer Society; The Individual Consumer; The Decision Making Process and The Social Consumer.

This course is delivered over 10 weeks from the Dublin 2 campus of City Colleges or online nationwide. This course is accredited by the Institute of Commercial Management on successful completion of a course assignment.

Terrorism & International Security Studies

This course aims to give the student a comprehensive grasp of modern terrorism, its origins and some idea of how it is likely to develop. The course will also act as an introduction to the international security landscape and explain who the different players are and where they are situated in terms of their roles in attempting to maintain peace and stability.

Those who wish to understand the root causes of terrorism and how to manage and contain it. While this may include career members of the security forces such as An Garda Siochana, the Defence Forces and the Prison Service, it will also be of relevance to business and humanitarian professionals whose work brings them to volatile regions. The course will also appeal to those involved in the local and national management of key states services and infrastructure.  Those involved in policy creation for governmental and non-governmental organisations will also benefit.

Diploma in Family History

The Diploma in Family History will assist students to develop the skills necessary to utilise the resources available to trace genealogical lineage using online search records as well as resources in historical libraries and archives. Students will investigate death certificates, wills census records, birth certificates and other primary records to teach students to identify ancestors in building their family tree.
