Course: Foundation course in Digital SLR Photography

Start date: Tuesday, 26 January 2016

Duration: 10 weeks, one evening per week from 6.30 to 9.30pm

Course fee: classroom-based €845 (or €895 if paying the course fee in instalments)

Multi-Course Discount: Students who register for two or more courses  can do so at a fee of €795 per course.




  • Session 1 : Introduction to photography and how digital cameras work.

    • What is Aperture
    • Using the histogram

    Session 2 :

    • Auto focus versus manual focus
    • Using selected focal points
    • White balance selection
    • Creating a custom white balance
    • Shoot and show your images

    Session 3 :

    • 4 tips for better composition
    • Rule of thirds
    • Filling the frame
    • Leading lines
    • Textures
    • Is your subject prominent, brightest and in focus?
    • Prospective – get creative
    • Shoot and show your images

    Session 4:

    • Learn to see the light.
    • Find quality natural and ambient light.
    • Using the light to create a mood in an image
    • Shoot and show your images

    Session 5 :

    • Create the light
    • Choose your main light source
    • Colour of light
    • How to deal with mixed lighting
    • Shoot and show your images

    Session 6

    • Fieldtrip – Shooting in the city with team exercises, refining composition and camera control.
    • Candid portrait challenge

    Session 7 :

    • Editing your images. Basic and creative editing to get the most out of your images and prepare them for print and web presentation. Review field trip images and select top 5 for printing. – Homework will be to edit these.

    Session 8

    • Shooting and directing a model.
    • Posing male and female subjects.
    • Importance of hands.
    • Telling a story and evoking emotion.
    • Review editing homework and order prints

    Session 9

    • Using strobe
    • Understanding shutter speed limitiations
    • Review images from previous session

    Session 10:

    • Review and critique of printed images. Learn to critique your own work. Image processing demonstration.
    • Final Q & A.

    Beginner/General Interest. No previous photography experience required.

    Equipment Needed:

    Bring your SLR camera (must have manual controls) and at least 1 lens.
    Optional: additional lenses, camera flash and tripod.
